Raak “Light Sculpture” model D-2079, design Maurice Grothausen – 1970s. This object, model D-2079, was designed in the 1970s by Maurice Grothausen for Raak Amsterdam. Grothausen regarded this lamp not primarily as a light source, but as an illuminated object – a sculpture in which light itself forms the material. The geometric design is understated but powerful: a vertical metal cylinder, often executed in black or bronze-colored metal, in which an open structure and diffuser merge into a play of shadow and light. Instead of actively illuminating the space, the lamp shines as an autonomous object. Light accentuates the form without completely revealing it. Housed in Raak’s Light Sculptures series, model D-2079 occupies a place between art and function. The design invites stillness and observation – no superfluous details, just volume, proportion and light. A timeless example of how lighting can also be a spatial experience.
