Czech academic painter, graphic artist, and illustrator. Among collectors, he is one of the most sought-after Czech artists of modern art. From 1909 to 1911, he was a member of SVU Mánes. In 1911, he left and co-founded the Group of Fine Artists. He was a soldier in World War I from 1915 to 1916. From 1918, he was a member of the Tvrdošíjní group, and from 1925, he was a corresponding member of the Viennese Hagenbund. From 1921 to 1946, he was again a member of SVU Mánes, serving as chairman from 1938-1939. As a theoretician and publicist, he contributed articles to magazines and newspapers (Přítomnost, Rozpravy Aventina, Pokroková revue, České slovo, etc.). In 1945, he was named a National Artist.
