Raised in Brooklyn, having studied art at the Cooper Union Art School in New York, Shirley Jaffe settled in France in 1949. In Paris, she frequented expatriate North American artists such as Sam Francis, Joan Mitchell, Jean Paul Riopelle, and Kimber Smith, representatives of American abstract expressionism in Europe. From the gestural painting of her beginnings, Shirley Jaffe evolved during the 60s, notably after a year spent in Berlin, towards a much more geometric work, then in the 1970s towards graphic and refined painting. Shirley Jaffe began exhibiting in 1966 at the Jean Fournier gallery, recommended by Sam Francis. This great lady of American painting in Europe has been the subject of three major retrospectives between 2022 and 2024, exhibitions in which the canvas offered here was featured.
