Lê Năng Hiển (1921–2014) was a prominent Vietnamese modernist painter, director, and historian who left a significant mark on 20th-century Vietnamese art. Born in Hanoi into a prosperous Confucian family, he emerged as a true Renaissance man, successfully combining a passion for painting, theater, and literature. The master achieved his greatest fame through his exquisite silk paintings capturing graceful Vietnamese women, as well as his large-scale lacquer compositions on historical themes. In his work, traditional Asian aesthetics and classical techniques seamlessly intertwined with the influences of European modernism. Throughout his long career, Lê Năng Hiển remained an independent creator whose works were distinguished by their poetic nature, soft palette, and deep respect for national heritage. Today, his canvases are recognized as an important part of Vietnam’s cultural legacy.
