Adam Štech (born 1980 in Podbořany) graduated from the Secondary Art School of Graphics in Jihlava (1999) and the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studios of professors Jiří Sopko and Vladimír Skrepl (2001 – 2008). In 2007, he undertook an artistic residency in Bellas Artes (Porto, Portugal). Since 2009, he has consistently exhibited his work independently in prominent galleries in Prague and elsewhere, with solo exhibitions in Brussels and Bratislava. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions and has been recognized by art critics and awarded the studio prize of Prof. Jiří Sopko. In his work, he draws from the tradition of Czech modernism, especially Cubism, but transforms it in an original way. His subjects are often traditional, yet like painters of the last century, he approaches them anew and reinterprets them for the contemporary viewer. His preferred technique, which is otherwise not very common in contemporary art, is mosaic. The grid of regular colored fields interestingly complements the shape deformations with which Štech plays in his paintings.
